What questions should you be asking of your pet joint health supplement? Cut through the myths and pseudo-science and ask these 4 questions to find out if your pet joint supplement works, is it safe and is it the best joint supplement for your dog or cat.

The pet supplement industry is jam-packed with myths and exaggerations. How do you know which joint supplement will work, and which is just money in the poop bag?

Ask your pet supplement brand these 4 critical questions and make the best choice for your furry friend.

#1 Is it supported by published, peer-reviewed, or evidence-based science?

Evidence-based brands use carefully designed research, from experts and veterinary academics, to test the performance of their supplement.

The studies should be species-specific (e.g., in dogs and cats) and prove the supplement works.

If no data is available for you to read, or it’s “on record,” you can’t confirm the supplement works and is safe for your pet.

The best pet joint supplements have evidence-based scientific studies, freely available.

#2 Is the supplement verified by a 3rd party laboratory?

Studies have shown that supplement labels are unreliable and inaccurate. Do you trust that your pet’s supplement contains exactly what it claims to?

Look for a supplement that uses a third-party laboratory verification process to confirm its ingredients and check for contaminants.

This might not be easy information to find.

If your supplement brand is externally verified and sticks to strict quality standards, they should be happy to tell you.

#3 How is it absorbed by the body, and how does it work?

Your vet may refer to this as the pharmacokinetics of a supplement.

Together they demonstrate if and how a supplement works, when it is safe to use, and how it might interact in the body.

If the brand doesn’t know how it works in the body, it could put your pet (or your pocket) at risk. Especially if your pet is taking any other pet supplements, is on medication, or has any other health issues.

You will need to ask your supplement brand for this information directly.

#4 Does it have synergistic effects or interact with any other substances?

Your supplement brand must understand any potential substance interactions or contraindications, and how your pet might respond if they have other medical conditions.

It may be unsafe to use alongside other substances or in certain conditions. (e.g., pregnancy or kidney disease).

Some supplements have positive, synergistic interactions that could improve your pet’s life, such as enhanced results when combined with NSAIDs.

Ask your supplement brand if they are aware of any positive or negative interactions..

Ask the right 4 questions about your pet’s supplements and get the answers you deserve.
